Suri Breeding Program Hits New HighWe are very excited with our 2006-07 drop of suri crias. With 12 cria born to date from our new solid white pure suri male, Southern Cloud Apollo, we have been blessed with 10 females and 2 males. His impeccable pedigree, with imported Peruvian males ILR Top Hat (sire) and ILR Donaire (grand-sire) in his lineage, has lifted the quality of these crias. Their locking, coverage and lustre stand out. They have all been solid colours, mostly whites or very light fawn. This suits our breeding program as we specialize in white and fawn suri alpacas here in southern Tasmania. As well, Chakaya Alpacas has moved! Yes, with the expansion of our herd numbers, it became necessary for us to find larger acreage. We only moved about 9kms further west to our present 16 acres in Judbury, with views to snow-capped mountains in the distance. Beautiful!! Our on-farm alpaca shop for retail sales will be available in a much larger building retailing high quality alpaca garments, both local and imported. We have pillows, doonas and underblankets made from our oldest, high micron animals, and these are proving popular. Over recent years our animals have had great success on the show scene with a large array of local ribbons awarded. In 2005 our show team of about 7 to 10 animals achieved almost 100 ribbons. The greatest achievements were in getting placed 1st and 2nd in class at the Sydney Royal, and placed 2nd at the 2005 National Show in Bendigo. This year we will be attending Melbourne Royal and the National Show, where we hope to do well with this latest drop of crias. So contact us today for information on alpaca sales, herd management or any advice on managing alpacas, setting up your business, fencing, feeding or veterinary matters.
